Workers to Combine Picket Lines on 2nd Day of Strike

(OAKLAND, CA) – Over 9,000 Service workers from the University of California’s 10 campuses will be consolidating picket lines by joining over 15,000 striking Patient Care Technical workers in front of UC’s 5 major medical centers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Davis, and Irvine on Wednesday. Roughly 15,000 of UC’s technical workers represented by UPTE-CWA will also be joining picket lines again, accompanied by striking hotel workers represented by UNITE HERE in San Francisco and San Diego.

This week’s walkout by UC workers marks the latest turn of events in a year of nationwide labor unrest from hotel workers, steel workers, teachers across the nation, and more. In response, AFSCME International President Lee Saunders released the following statement:

“Everywhere you look, working people are organizing and mobilizing with unprecedented vitality. They are rising up against a rigged system that undermines their freedom and takes away their seat at the table. They are insisting that their voice be heard.

“No one is doing so with more pride than the members of AFSCME Local 3299. While UC executives enjoy perks and slush funds, UC workers struggle just to pay their bills and support their families, making sacrifices every day to deliver first-class public services, fearful that their job will be outsourced to outside contractors who pay poverty wages.

“Instead of being a beacon of opportunity, UC is a bastion of inequality. This strike is about demanding a fair, equitable contract – and basic dignity and respect – for the proud men and women who make this university happen.”

Details of the 5 major Patient Care Technical Unit strike lines can be found below. Please note the difference in location for Wednesday’s San Francisco picket.
