Lawmakers and Community Leaders Voice Support, UC Workers Enter 3rd Day of Strike

(OAKLAND, CA) – Yesterday, lawmakers and community leaders joined the picket lines at the University of California’s 5 major medical centers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Irvine, and Sacramento in support of the University’s striking patient care workers. The over 15,000 hospital workers—joined by 9,000 service workers and 15,000 technical workers—have been on strike since Tuesday over concerns of the University’s practice of outsourcing jobs to private firms that pay lower wages, provide fewer benefits, and expose workers to a higher risk of labor abuse like wage theft.

“When you make the decision to strike, you demonstrate the courage of your convictions, to do what’s right by your fellow workers; to do what’s right by your family members; to do what’s right by your children, your sons and daughters who look up to each and every one of you,” said U.S. Senate candidate Kevin De Leon to striking workers at UCLA Wednesday. “This is about human dignity and respect.”

The strike, which was authorized by an estimated 39,000 UC workers statewide, enters its final day Thursday. Other dignitaries that have joined the strike lines since Tuesday include State Assemblymembers Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher, Shirley Weber, Miguel Santiago, David Chiu, Phil Ting, Sharon Quirk-Silva, AFSCME International President Lee Saunders, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, and many more.
