Victory for 2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election
Dear Friends:
WE DID IT!
On September 14, 2021, the Recall of Governor Newsom was soundly defeated by a thirty point margin. The effort aimed to roll back California’s progress on workers’ rights, immigrant rights, women’s rights, COVID 19, racial justice and so much more. And we stopped it cold.
Over the past four weeks, AFSCME Local 3299 members joined with allies across the labor movement to text, call and knock on the doors of more than 1.4 million voters. California’s unions and working families were a clear difference maker in this race, just as we are every day at the jobsite and in our neighborhoods.
“On September 14, 2021, Californians overwhelmingly rejected efforts to take us backwards in the fight against COVID 19 and the work of building a more inclusive and equitable future for working families. Just as frontline workers have led efforts to protect families and communities from the devastation of a deadly pandemic and climate-fueled wildfires, we rose to defend our state from the anti-union and anti-science extremism at the heart of this recall. Together, we united behind a Governor who has prioritized our health, the safety of essential workers and school children, and an economy that works for all of us.”—AFSCME 3299 President Kathryn Lybarger
As we celebrate this great victory, we will continue to stand up for the principles of dignity, equality, and security at the center of our union, and the patients and students we are proud to serve The recall showed that there are powerful forces in our country that are determined to erode every inch of progress we’ve made. But it also proved again that when we fight together—we win.
Thanks for all you did to #ProtectOurProgress and #StopTheAntiUnionRecall.
In Solidarity,
Monica De Leon, Political Committee Chair
