Irvine, Calif., Oct. 17, 2011 – California Irvine and AFSCME Local 3299 announced today (Oct. 17, 2011) an agreement to complete the in-sourcing of custodial duties on campus.
The university will hire 94 full-time custodians by mid-April 2012. Many of these individuals have been working on campus through an outside contractor to clean classrooms, the recreation facility, offices and labs.
“We have always been, and will continue to be committed to fair and equitable treatment for all employees on our campus,” Drake said. “This agreement is consistent with actions we’ve taken in the past and it comports with our campus values and principles. We are very pleased to include these individuals in the UCI family.”
“We are pleased to resolve this issue with AFSCME,” said Dwaine Duckett, vice president of human resources system-wide. “We look forward to finding opportunities in the future for UC and the union to collaborate and work together on common goals and interests.”
“After almost three long years, we are thrilled that these dedicated workers will soon be university employees,” said Julian Posadas, principal food service Worker and executive vice president AFSCME Local 3299. “We look forward to continuing to work with the University of California to ensure good jobs in our community and a quality education for all Californians.”
The campus and AFSCME Local 3299 anticipate working as partners for the betterment of the UCI community and reinforcing their commitment to the campus’s values of respect, intellectual curiosity, integrity, commitment, empathy, appreciation and fun.
