FRESNO, Calif. (KMJ) — There’s good news for thousands of University of California students; administrators are backing down on hefty tuition hikes.

A proposal to raise fees on some 14,000 students has been abandoned by top officials. Under the now-scrapped plan, students would have seen expenses skyrocket by around $2,700 annually.

College bosses now say they seek to impose hikes affecting only around 800 students — most of whom are in nursing programs.

U.C. Spokeswoman Dianne Klein says the increases are necessary for the university, in order to maintain “top-quality programs,” and “attract the best graduates.”

However, Klein warns the tuition freeze may not last beyond the 2013 – 2014 school year, as it’s “not a sustainable model.”
