BERKELEY — University of California President Janet Napolitano has been appointed as a tenured faculty member at UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy.

Dean Henry Brady said Napolitano’s background as governor of Arizona and President Barack Obama’s homeland security secretary made her a welcome addition to the school.

Some faculty members and students complained about Napolitano’s lack of academic experience when she was named as the 10-campus university’s 20th president last year.

UC spokeswoman Janet Gilmore says UC presidents usually hold simultaneous positions as faculty members. Napolitano’s predecessor, Mark Yudof, now teaches a course on education policy and the law as a professor at Berkeley.

Gilmore says Napolitano won’t earn any money from her faculty position while she is serving as president, a job with an annual salary of $570,000.

UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks approved the appointment on Thursday.
