Anthony-Cannella

State Sen. Anthony Cannella, R-Ceres, is leading a media event at the State Capitol on Wednesday to launch “Take Back UC,” a coalition of Californians advocating for reform in the University of California system.

Cannella will be joined by Assemblyman Richard Pan, D-Sacramento, is a show of bipartisan support for the new group. Other elected officials, UC students, workers and others are also expected to attend.

Among the issues noted on the Take Back UC website:

• Tuition has tripled since 2002.

• UC hospitals are dangerously understaffed.

• Many UC workers qualify for public assistance.

Cannella and Pan issued this comment in a news release: “With the passage of Prop. 30 last year, California voters expressed their desire to increase the quality of our education system. We need to take this opportunity to increase access and reverse the effects of the great recession and mismanagement at UC.

“California simply cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past at our most prized public institution. We are building a grassroots movement to bring true reform to the system and remain watchdogs to protect UC for future generations.”

The media event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in room 317 of the State Capitol.
