UC leaders meet to discuss budget, state of system

By Kevin Oliver

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —More than a dozen people were arrested Wednesday in downtown Sacramento during a meeting of the University of California Board of Regents.

The workers chanted, “What’s this about? Patient care,” as they were handcuffed and led away by university police.

The meetings, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, are taking place at the Sacramento Convention Center to discuss the UC system’s budget and academic performance.

Thirteen protesters were arrested after the public comment period ended.

The protesters were members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees.

The union filed a notice of intent to strike after more than a year of failed contract negotiations.

“Patient care is being cut and the people who provide that service are being attacked and not being supported,” said Kathryn Lybarger, one of the protestors arrested.

“(The University of California) is putting their money with executives and excessive executive entitlements instead of where it belongs, with patients,” Lybarger said.

Meanwhile, dozens of workers picketed outside the convention center.

The union is planning a 48-hour strike beginning May 21 at 4 a.m.
