Why Are UC Workers on Strike?
UC Workers On Strike!
Over UC’s Illegal Attacks
UC workers are taking a stand against the University’s serial lawbreaking. This time, UC announced a system-wide hiring freeze and unilaterally imposed benefit cuts to new hospital workers without bargaining either over the effects on us, our patients, and our students.
“How can UC justify an illegal hiring freeze when our biggest crisis is short staffing and unsafe conditions? Workers are burning out, and management’s solution is to do less? This isn’t just a bad policy, it’s a direct threat to the safety of our workers!” – Kat Bedford, LBNL, SX
Over 13,000 frontline UC Service and Patient Care Workers have left their jobs in the last four years due to declining job quality. These are the folks who pick up the call button when there’s an emergency, who feed students, who keep UC clean, and so much more.
The UC Californians Depend on is in Trouble. UC acknowledges that its staff vacancy rate has tripled since the COVID-19 Pandemic, and that its staff vacancy crisis threatens campus and hospital services. It’s why workers are taking a stand today and demanding accountability!
