UC San Diego has opened one of the largest graduate student housing complexes in the University of California system in time for the start of the fall quarter.

Mesa Nueva at La Jolla Village Drive and Regents Road replaces 86 units built almost 50 years ago with housing for 1,350 graduate and professional students.

The complex of five, eight-story buildings includes a small grocery store, coffee shop, a parking structure, bike racks for every resident and open space.

“This new housing for our graduate students is part of our overall effort to enhance the student experience at UC San Diego and advance our strategic plan goal of expanding our graduate student population,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.

“Our graduate students are vital to the university, as they propel our research and contribute to our innovation and success,” he added.

The housing is near Gilman Bridge, which is being built over Interstate 5 to link the east and west parts of the campus, and is close to the planned station on the San Diego trolley Blue Line.

Mesa Nueva will rent for an average of $750 per month per person.
